On April 12, 2023, the Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, announced that over 30,000 Afghan refugees have been welcomed into the country since August 2021. The government aims to resettle at least 40,000 Afghan nationals by the end of 2023. The latest arrivals include individuals who supported Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, family members of former Afghan interpreters, and privately sponsored refugees. The focus is on resettling the most vulnerable Afghans, such as women leaders, human rights defenders, persecuted and religious minorities, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, and journalists. These newcomers will settle in various communities across Canada, including Surrey (BC), Toronto, and London (ON). Despite the lack of Canadian diplomatic or military presence in Afghanistan, the country’s efforts have been successful due to collaborations with international partners, organizations, and the contributions of Canadians.
